Types of Membership

Full – Active Membership (FA)

Annual fee: €100.00

  • Those who have been Full Members of the IMTA prior to September 2003.
  • An accredited course consisting of 300 or more hours of classroom and practical instruction in anatomy, physiology and massage techniques. (Examinations must be carried out by an independent examining body and/or external moderator).
  • American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) or Northern Institute of Massage (NIM) certificates in anatomy, physiology and body massage.
  • Persons who have been Associate Members for three years (see below).

Full – Inactive Membership (FIN)

Annual fee: €50.00

  • Available for Full Members who may be currently taking a break from their practice.

Associate Membership (ASS)


Annual fee: €100.00

  • Holders of ITEC, CIBTAC or CIDESCO qualifications in massage, anatomy & physiology.
  • Graduates of massage training programmes that are less than 300 hours but a minimum of 100 hours in massage, anatomy and physiology.
  • Holders of massage certificates, other than the above, with more than three years practical work experience (2 character/work references may be required).
  • Associate membership is available for a maximum of three years, after which the member becomes eligible for full membership.

1st Year Student Membership (STU)

Student fee: €35.00

(Covers course period & until results are received)

  • Students currently attending a course that leads to an ITEC, CIBTAC, AMTA or NIM certificate in massage, anatomy and physiology
  • Student fee of €35 covers full academic year or course period and up until results are received, with automatic upgrade to Associate Membership on qualification.
  • Other massage training programme with comparable certificate in anatomy and physiology.
  • Qualified massage therapists currently attending additional courses DO NOT qualify for student membership.
  • This Student Rate applies while members are attending full or part-time courses. Please contact the Administrator (086 377 3801) to discuss your best options for membership upgrade after qualification or when continuting study into subsequent years.

Note: Qualifications gained as a result of correspondence courses will not be deemed as adequate for membership.

Since March 2009 all members are required to hold, at least,  a current Basic First Aid certificate. A three-month period of grace is given from date of membership for you to organise a course, if you do not have a current certificate. A list of First Aid course providers is available.
